National Margarita Day
National Margarita Day is a celebration of one of the most beloved cocktails around the world (hint: it’s the margarita!). Millions of people around the world love this sacred tequila, triple sec, and lime drink, and that is never truer than on National Margarita Day!
The Official Drink of Having Fun
Purportedly created in 1938 in Mexico, the margarita is widely considered “the official drink of having fun” … and whether you like it straight up, on the rocks, frozen, with a salt rim, sugar rim, or something else, you really can’t go wrong when it comes to this versatile drink.
“Margarita: It’s more than a girl’s name.”
Several people lay claim to being the “OG” margarita maker, and while the earliest known occurrences of the famed cocktail happened in 1938 in Baja California by Carlos “Danny” Herrer and in 1942 in Juárez, Mexico by Francisco “Pancho” Morales, there are two people that have a stronger claim.
A woman from Dallas, Texas, named Margarita Sames, believes that she created the drink in 1948 for guest Tommy Hilton while vacationing in her home in Acapulco, Mexico. However, Jose Cuervo (yes, of the famous tequila brand) claimed that he had been running ad campaigns since 1945 using the catchphrase, “Margarita: It’s more than a girl’s name.”
Well, no matter which of these was the actual first, we salute you all for your fabulous mixology skills!
